Martin Hallmark (piano)
Martin is a Hertfordshire-based composer and pianist. Originally a classically-trained musician he studied music at Jesus College Cambridge where he first discovered his passion for jazz.
He has played in a range of jazz and funk formats since the early 1990s including with Helen MacDonald and Juba, Omar Puente, Orphy Robinson, Nana Tsiboe, the Ben Martin Quartet, his own Martin Hallmark quartet, which was the first band to feature his own compositions, funk and soul band Makossa and Q3. Largely self-taught as a jazz musician, he has also had brief periods of study with Chick Corea, John Patitucci, Antonio Sanchez, Jean Touissant and Huw Warren.
His compositions have a range of influences across the jazz idiom whilst also fusing with classical elements, and with its own clear individual style. The music is intricate, melodic and deceptively complex, which reflects both the jazz musical heritage and a contemporary outlook.
